Discover the tranquility of Gatamaiyu Riverine Walk, an unparalleled hike in Gatamaiyu Forest within the expansive Kereita Forest, just 55km from Nairobi. Spanning 4722 hectares, Kereita is an indigenous forest at the southern end of the Aberdares range, with an average altitude of 1800m above sea level. Preserved by Kijabe Environment Volunteers (KENVO), this Important Bird Area (IBA) is a true paradise.
Uncover the forest’s history as a haven for Kikuyu warriors and the site of the Lari Massacre. The forest bathing trek begins at the Fisheries office near Gatamaiyu Forest Gate, winding along the Gatamaiyu River, offering a slow-paced journey through lush undergrowth and giant ferns. Absorb the magic of the forest, from elephant footprints to playful Colobus monkeys, culminating in an 18ft waterfall.
This trail, a slow walk to appreciate nature’s beauty, is not for the physically challenging, but an opportunity to reconnect and unwind. Kids aged 9-17 are welcome, with a reminder to pack ample snacks and water. Rated easy, the 12 km trail takes 4-5 hours to complete.
